Virgin Island Reopens: A Shared Duty in the Bohol Island Geopark
Feb 3, 2026

In the pursuit of sustainable tourism, Bohol—the first and only UNESCO Global Geopark in the Philippines—continues to strengthen its commitment to balancing environmental protection with inclusive economic growth.

This was highlighted as the Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh), under the leadership of Governor Aris Aumentado, led the official reopening of Virgin Island on February 3, 2026, marking a renewed effort to revive local livelihoods while ensuring that environmental integrity remains a top priority.

The reopening reflects the Capitol’s vision of transforming tourism destinations into models of sustainability, accountability, and long-term environmental stewardship.

In his message, Governor Aumentado congratulated and thanked stakeholders, especially the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). He underscored that tourism cannot be sustained if environmental protection is neglected, stressing the need to strike a balance between economic activity and ecological preservation.

“We know na nga ang livelihood usa nas component nga makahatag og panginabuhian sa katawhan. But dili man pod pwede nga ang atong environment nga pasagdan,” he emphasized.

The governor also called on stakeholders and communities to unite in safeguarding Bohol’s natural resources and emphasized the importance of responsible management to ensure that Virgin Island remains a viable and well-protected tourism asset.

Meanwhile, Regional Director Laudemir Salac of the DENR–Region VII emphasized that the reopening of Virgin Island is governed by clear terms and conditions, including a new management system, defined visitor guidelines, and strengthened environmental safeguards.

“Hindi na po mauulit yung nangyari dati. Gusto natin na maging sustainable itong opening ng Virgin Island. We make sure that the support of the interagencies has a bigger role. We cannot only make it with DENR,” Salac said in his message.

He further stressed that economic growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand through the strict enforcement of environmental laws and responsible tourism policies, reiterating that the primary intention of the initiative is to promote sustainable tourism while preserving the island’s ecological integrity.

Following the ceremonial program, officials led a ribbon-cutting to formally mark the reopening of Virgin Island, symbolizing a new chapter in its management and development. A blessing of the island was also conducted, highlighting the shared hope for its protection, responsible use, and continued contribution to the province’s tourism and local economy.

The event was attended by Executive Assistant Romeo Teruel, OIC of the Bohol Provincial Tourism Office Joanne Pinat, CENRO Glicerita Racho, PENRO Jose Cleo Cary Colis, officials from the LGU of Panglao led by Mayor Boy Arcay, and a representative from the Department of Agriculture, demonstrating strong inter-agency collaboration and shared accountability in ensuring the sustainable management of the island.

As the Virgin Island reopens to visitors, the Provincial Government of Bohol calls on tourists, local communities, and partner agencies to take part in protecting the environment while supporting sustainable economic activities.

This initiative aligns with the Capitol’s Strategic Change Agenda, particularly its focus on Sustainable Tourism, reinforcing Bohol’s commitment to responsible, resilient, and future-ready tourism development. (PIMO/JFP)
